Dennis Oppenheim, Rocked Circle-Fear
Rocked Circle-Fear, 1971.

Dennis Oppenheim stood in a five-foot-diameter circle for half an hour while a collaborator on the third floor of an adjacent building dropped rocks into the circle. There were no direct hits, but they were close enough to inspire fear; a video camera captured his changing facial expression under the impact of the surges and ebbs of feeling. As I stand in a five- foot diameter circle, rocks are thrown at me. The circle demarcates the line of fire. A video camera is focused on my face. The face is captive, its expression a direct result of the apprehension of hazard. Fear is the emotion which produces a final series of expressions.
