Webcam Skywatch Experiment - August 2004.

The setup - I use an old Sony DCR-PC2 digicam and connect it by Firewire to my old Dell Win2K PC. The only freeware video program that works with this setup is FWink. It takes a picture every minute and stores it as a 600*800 bit jpeg. The pictures are renamed and stored using a VBScript program. I analyzed all the pictures with IrfanView and selected the most interesting ones. Sampling frequency too low - In a period of 3 days I took more than 3000 pictures (sometimes the programs would crash and stop recording). It is quite disappointing how few pictures contain anything interesting. One picture every minute is too slow to catch everything that happens in the sky. A random sky event - a bird or plane passing by - takes several seconds. It would be much better to take a picture every second.

In 2004 Petr Kazil has been busy with the following projects in Rotterdam, The Netherlands:

- Searching for 'urban spooklights' (thereby hijacking and abusing an idea from parapsychology).

- Trying to understand and map the aircraft corridors and contrails above the city (thereby hijacking the conspiracy idea of "chemtrails").

- Research into possible 'power places' based upon the local geology, archaeology and history (thereby hijacking an idea from German geomantic books).

- Recording 'spontaneous artworks' that can be encountered in the city.

- Analyzing the spontaneous distribution and dispersal of leaves, seeds, snow and other light debris in the city (following up on writings by Marcel Minnaert).

- Learning the names of the clouds and watching for atmospheric optics phenomena (sundogs, rainbows and halo's) that can be seen above the city.

He publishes his explorations on a private website (www.xs4all.nl/~kazil) and participates in discussions on the Urban Exploration forum (www.uer.ca) and the Fortean Times forum (http://www.forteantimes.com/forum/index.php). He hopes to be able to share more results through Glowlab in the future.
